My Sister’s Place has been a foundational domestic violence support organization in Washington, DC since 76. Originally also including a domestic violence hotline in its programs, MSP has focused more recently on supporting victims through housing, counseling, legal aid, and advocacy.
My Sister’s Place is an organization specific to Washington, DC, unlike more national advocacy and legislation-focused groups. Other domestic violence organizations in Washington, DC include DC SAFE (emergency service-specific), Mt. Carmel House (permanent housing-specific), and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (emergency assistance-specific).
My Sister’s Place is unique, however, as they successfully provide a “full continuum of care” for victims who seek their help. Their focus on comprehensive care is a critical response to the need for housing not only for victims to safely escape to, but also for victims to transition into a domestic violence-free life after emergency care.
